  1. Whenever I travel to a city where I don't know the hotels, I book through hotwire.com. As their advertisements say, you can get a 4 star hotel for a 2 star price. They seem pretty choosey about who they will accept. I have never had a bad hotel through them. I have had a couple were my reaction was "Ehh, so what?" but nothing bad. And I have had truly wonderful hotels for great prices. This is not a bidding site. They tell you the price, the neighborhood, and the amenities at the hotel (like, whether there is a pool, Internet, free breakfast, an airport shuttle, or whatever). But the gimmick is that they do not tell you the actual name and address of the hotel until *after* you agree to the deal. I suppose there is always some risk in that, but as I said, I have never gotten burned even once. And I think their ratings are fair. A three star hotel will be very nice for sure. A four star will be luxurious. Two stars hotels are okay: simple and clean, but not fancy. Only once did I stay at one of their one-stars, and it was, well, a one star. But it was clean and the bed was comfortable. It even included free breakfast. But it was pretty basic, and I don't think I would stay in a one star again, at least if I was traveling with my wife. She likes her creature comforts. Because hotels use Hotwire to get rid of unsold rooms, the deals tend to get better as you get closer to the travel date. When they realize they can't sell the room for the regular price, they contact Hotwire so that they can get some money for the room. Otherwise, they wouldn't be getting anything at all. So, if you check now for March, the deals might not seem that great, and there might not be a lot of choices. But by February, things might open up more. Anyway, check it out here. http://www.hotwire.com
  2. Part of giving you a good answer can depend on a lot of different points...for example: if it's your 1st trip here and you're not comfortable driving around, and the locations/events you want to attend, could result in a completely different answer than if you've been here several times, are comfortable driving in the metro area and are attending/visiting things or people in several different areas. Remember, what the locals consider Atlanta, from downtown sticks out about 25 miles in all directions. If you are going to be in the downtown area, then take a look at the Embassy Suites. It's right across the street from the Dome, the Omni, the World Congress Center, Phillips Arena: close to the Tabernacle which is a great concert venue; a short walk to MARTA which is our mass transit; dozens of restaurants & bars; and just up the street from the aquarium. They are a suite only set-up, but usually at prices no more than a regular size room...and have the best hot breakfast buffet you'll find almost anywhere. It's my hotel of choice when I'm on the road. While there are cheaper places available...when you take in the location, a great suite (not just a room) and a great meal, the value is much better.
